Razzie Awards: Aussies, and Donald Trump, nominated among 'worst of the worst'

On the Razzies' hit list this year? Puppets, Sherlocks, the Mob and Donald Trump.

There's also a few ignominious honours for Australian filmmaking duo The Spierig Brothers.

The nominations are out for the 39th annual Golden Raspberry Awards, which fetes the very worst of the worst films Hollywood has to offer, and the love - or hate? - has been spread out among a number of films.

Leading the critically reviled charge this year, with six nominations each, are the John Travolta crime drama Gotti, the Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly team-up Holmes & Watson, Dinesh D'Souza's conservative-leaning Death of a Nation, and the Melissa McCarthy comedy The Happytime Murders.

Winchester, by Brisbane filmmakers The Spierig Brothers (Undead, Predestination) earned four nominations, including worst picture and worst director for the duo.

The supernatural horror film, starring Helen Mirren (up for worst actress) and Aussie actors Jason Clarke and Sarah Snook, was critically panned following its February release but proved a box office winner, grossing over $US44 million worldwide against a reported $US3.5 million budget.

Gotti, HappytimeHolmes and Robin Hood are the other films up for worst picture.

Among the other noteworthy nominations: Melissa McCarthy, who's in the running for a best actress Oscar nomination with Can You Ever Forgive Me?, was nominated for worst actress for Happytime Murders and Life of the Party, and President Donald Trump (Death of a Nation and Fahrenheit 11/9) is in the worst actor category with Travolta, Ferrell, Johnny Depp (Sherlock Gnomes) and Bruce Willis (Death Wish).

Trump and "his self-perpetuating pettiness" are also up for the Razzies' worst screen combo award.

The US president actually already has a Razzie to his name: he won the best supporting actor prize for 1991's Ghosts Can't Do It, in which he played himself opposite Bo Derek.

The tongue-in-cheek Razzies, created in 1980, serve as an antidote to Hollywood's Oscars ceremony.

"With a stumbling stock market, a possible impending presidential impeachment, raging wild fires, devastating floods, mass shootings and a litany of plagues that reached near Biblical proportions, 2018 was a year overfull with disasters," Razzie founder John Wilson said.

"Winners" for the awards will be announced on February 23, the day before the Academy Awards hands out its honours for cinema's finest.
