Just a month after returning from a horror run of injuries for his first AFL game in 647 days against Adelaide in Showdown 46, the club announced on Thursday the 28-year-old was taking some time out.

The Power’s general manager of football Chris Davies said the defender’s health and wellbeing the primary focus.

“Matthew is a valued player, teammate and person at the Port Adelaide Football Club. At this point, the best option for his overall health is to step away from the game for a while,” Davies said.

“The club’s primary focus is on Matthew’s health and welfare and we will continue to provide him with the ongoing support he requires.”

“We can’t say at this point how long that will be but he will be given as long as he needs.”

The announcement comes in the same week St Kilda’s four-time best and fairest Jack Steven returned to training for the first time since Round 6 after taking time off to deal with a mental health issue.
