Steep rises in fares likely

The state government will announce substantial increases in bus, tram, and railway fares and rail freight charges within the next six weeks, it was reported in the Herald. Tram and bus and railway fares will probably rise by at least 25 per cent, and freight charges by at least 12 ½ per cent. Last Thursday the Premier, Mr Cahill, said it would be impossible to avoid fare increases. He said that the government would ask the people to “make some sacrifices. ”

First loss since 1912

London, May 18. Surrey beat Australia by 10 wickets at the Oval. It is the first time a county side has beaten Australia since Hampshire won in 1912 – also by 10 wickets. Australia again failed miserably against spin bowling today and totalled only 107 in its second innings. Surrey needed only 20 runs in its second innings to win. Australian captain Ian Johnson, said: “Surrey’s win was mainly due to beautiful bowling by Lock and Laker, who ‘did us cold.’”

Trams bank up after car smash

Tram traffic in New South Head Road was held up for more than half an hour last night after two cars and a taxi-cab collided at Point Piper. The drivers of the cars are in hospital. The cars, which met head-on with terrific force, were wrecked. They were practically new. Smashed bodywork in the cars was forced back on to the drivers. The cars could not be moved from the tracks and long lines of trams extended in both directions, it was reported.
