Steve ‘Commando’ Willis accused of lying under oath in AVO claim against former client

Jun “Margaret” Yue was ordered to stay away from the Biggest Loser star in October last year after Mr Willis claimed he held fears about his former client’s escalating behaviour.

Ms Yue is now appealing the decision in the NSW District Court, where a remote hearing hampered by technical difficulties took place on Monday afternoon.

Ms Yue trained with Mr Willis from March 2019 to May 2020, paying him $150 a session three times a week, before she went into arrears and the relationship turned sour.

Her barrister Michael Fokkes said on Monday Mr Willis had told the court an “egregious” lie about Ms Yue expressing “irritation and agitation” when he didn’t reply to her over the Christmas and New Year period in 2019.

This claim was contradicted by instant messaging records, Mr Fokkes said, as was Mr Willis’s evidence that he had messaged Ms Yue to say: “I’m spending time with my family and my children and I’m not constantly on my phone”.

As well, Mr Fokkes said, the records indicated Mr Willis had “never once” messaged Ms Yue to say she was being inappropriate or, simply, “pull your head in”.

The records demonstrated Mr Willis was “lying under oath” and had “devastating impacts for his credibility”, Mr Fokkes said.

District Court Judge James Bennett labelled the submission “fairly bold” and asked what possible motive Mr Willis would have to say what he did.

In response Mr Fokkes suggested Mr Willis’s partner, Harika Vancuylenberg, had taken a disliking to Ms Yue and was the “driving force” behind the AVO application.

Ms Yue was ordered by Magistrate Jennifer Price on October 30 last year to not contact Mr Willis or go within 200m of his home or work for two years.

The 45-year-old TV personality told Parramatta Local Court he was increasingly concerned by Ms Yue’s behaviour, in particular, a May 2020 incident where she turned up at a training session he had with another client after seemingly tracking him down on Instagram.

“That rattled me because how does someone find me in North Sydney?” Mr Willis told Parramatta Local Court. “The words from her mouth were, ‘I’ve been coming here every day of the week’.”

Mr Fokkes said on Monday Ms Yue “vigorously disputes” the allegations of stalking and only approached Mr Willis twice in the park in an attempt to repay $1300 she owed in training fees.

On another occasion she was at Sydney Airport the day he returned home from a trip to Tahiti and sent him a text offering a lift home, which went unanswered.

Ms Yue told the court she was at the airport on other business.

The airport incident was the only one where there was “even remotely a grey area”, Mr Fokkes said.

The hearing continues on September 3.
