The Block episode 10 recap: Ronnie walks off The Block after a serious accident leaves him shattered

As Mitch and Mark revelled in their first victory of the competition, Luke and Josh were smarting over their low score and the harsh words that were directed at that bizarre bath caddie cheese board.

“The burning question is how many points did we lose for putting out Maltesers and cheese?” Josh asked.

Not enough, in my opinion. Who on earth wolfs down a block of cheddar in the tub? Especially without crackers or a knife! Only savages would do that!

“If you’re in the bath and you’ve got a bit of cheese and chocolate there. There’s no harm in that,” a dumbfounded Josh continued, giving viewers some rather scary insight into his bath time ritual.

If their first three rooms have been anything to go by, these boys are still taking their styling cues from Love Island or The Bachelor mansion rather than Vogue Living.

With that in mind, one can only imagine their master bedroom will be filled with flickering candles, a fur throw and red rose petals strewn across black satin sheets.

Not everyone was as down on the twins’ room as the judges. Mitch and Mark got stuck into eating those offending chocolates. While aspiring country music stars Kirsty and Jesse found it, well, far less offensive than they’d expected.

“This is actually kind of nice. The way the judges described it I thought I was walking into a vegemite and cheese sandwich,” Kirsty exclaimed.

Remarkably, none of the teams were too harsh about each other’s efforts upon touring the bathrooms.

Ronnie was particularly impressed by Kirsty and Jesse’s efforts in creating yet another pale blue room with a beach-theme.

“It’s very quiche,” Ronnie noted of Jesse and Kirsty’s seashell towel holders.

“That’s kitsch,” corrected Georgia, knowing full well the only dodgy food styling could be found down the road at Josh and Luke’s bathroom.

There was no time for Josh or Luke to kick back and enjoy a long soak, let alone get stuck into their bathroom snack pack because it was master bedroom and walk-in robe week.

The duo soon realised, after a visit from foreman Dan, that they might have bitten off a bit more than they could chew with their revised floor plans.

Against advice from architect Julian Benchley, the twins were now using the space allocated for a double garage as a buyer’s retreat. This meant they had to basically start from scratch and build their entire bedroom structure from the ground up.

They were also constrained by the height levels detailed in the plans approved by Bayside Council, which only allowed for the sort of low, flat ceiling typically found on a garage rather than the flashy boudoir envisaged by the twins.

Making matters worse, their builder planned to raise the floor to accommodate plumbing for the ensuite and to do that, without a raked ceiling, would only make the master bedroom even more cramped.

“We feel like blind mice being led into a trap,” moaned Josh (clearly cheese is still front of mind with all this talk of mouse traps).

“Not really, it’s our own fault,” Luke interrupted, in a rare admission of failure before quickly correcting himself and pointing the finger of blame elsewhere.

“But I guess when Julian was here, he failed to tell us what the pitch of that roof was going to be.” Yep, apparently Julian wasn’t clear enough when he repeatedly told them their bedroom plan was a huge mistake.

Adding to their woes, Dan crunched the numbers himself and discovered that in allowing space for the plumbing, the twins’ bedroom ceiling height would now be below the legal limit.

“If the house is non-compliant then we can’t sell it so there’s only one choice. They have to rip it all up,” Dan said.

Turns out, the builder had mistaken the roof height for the ceiling height and therefore hadn’t taken into account guttering and other assorted things that are needed between a bedroom, and the stars above.

“You just know, as soon as that tape measure comes out. It’s trouble,” the twins fumed.

“We wanted it [the ceiling height] to be about 2.7 and we are at 2.3.”

Ever the movers and shakers, the twins decided to do what they do best. Launch a charm offensive. Armed with a new plan to create a raked ceiling to mirror the main house structure, which rose from a 2.3m height at the boundary up to 2.9m at the far end of the room, Luke was deployed to Bayside council to do some smooth talking.

And lo and behold it worked. I guess all that practice sweet-talking beauties by the pool on Love Island paid off!

Now they had gotten their lofty plans over the line with Bayside Council, the boys decided to up the ante and add four skylights to give the impression of more space.

Now well and truly behind in their building, the boys decided to bite the bullet and pull the HiPages lever to get their hands on another builder and some plasterers to get their bedroom back on track.

“I want to know, who did you sleep with at council to keep getting all these approvals,” Ronnie asked Luke over a glass of prosecco at Mitch and Mark’s “winners are grinners” dinner.

“What happens at council, stays at council,” laughed Luke.

Ever the strategists, Mitch and Mark hosted their festivities right in front of their master bedroom, giving the competition a front-row seat to how advanced they were with their reno.

The party at Mitch and Mark’s place couldn’t have come at a better time for poor old Ronnie who had a breakdown earlier in the day.

A sobbing Ronnie was comforted by Keith of all people. Usually the one who seems to relish pushing contestants to breaking point, old Keith seemed uncharacteristically concerned at Ronnie’s reaction.

The father-of-three was tipped over the edge when Keith admonished him for unsafe work practices, spotting the roof hadn’t been properly propped just moments before 3 tonnes of plaster sheeting collapsed.

“This is dangerous, we need to shut this down,” Keith said of Ronnie’s work site.

“What if someone was standing there (when the sheets collapsed), they are going to hospital. That’s why we don’t stack plaster sheets up vertically.”

Ronnie later confessed that he had been taking medication for ADHD to help him focus.

“Tuesday for me was probably one of the most stressful days ever on The Block,” he said.

“It was unusual for me because I don’t have bad days. I always turn a negative into a positive.”
