The popular Foxtel prison drama will air the debut episode of its ninth season on Fox Showcase at 8.30pm Tuesday night, aptly titled Wentworth: The Final Sentence.

With 10 episodes airing weekly, the series will close the chapter with its finale in October after climbing to global recognition since it debuted in 2013.

Wentworth is broadcast in more than 170 countries around the world, with its storytelling compared to the likes of Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy and Orange is the New Black.

Australian actress Kate Atkinson, who has played Vera Bennett on the show since day one, told Stellar she felt the show’s appeal rested with its relentless characters.

“It’s just really good entertainment. But I also think maybe people find themselves in the characters and they like characters who fight or fail time and time again, and keep trying,” Atkinson said.

Her former co-star, Danielle Cormack, whose character Bea Smith was killed off in season 4, added she still receives praise from fans despite not appearing on Wentworth since 2016.

“I’m still getting messages from people – and my character is dead and gone! This show has charged some amazing responses from people because we’re introducing themes and topics that inspire people to come forward with their stories,” Cormack said.

As we anticipate the final season, here’s everything you need to know.
